CIA4: Reading Interest Groups

Page history last edited by Linda Dextre 11 years, 2 months ago

Welcome to our 4th CIA group!
Our group will meet January 28-February 22

Objective:

Students will read text within their interest areas and process their comprehension through journaling. Students will analyze their own interests and connections, then share with their group and with the whole class. Weekly assignments are collected for credit.
All students are expected to participate daily. Our group was selected with the criteria that they passed their EOG Reading tests last year. Many of our students excel in Language Arts, therefore, my goal is to find challenging and meaningful ways to process written works through engagement. Students receive weekly credit for their work which is passed to their team teachers. Journal entries are not shared with the class without consent from the student writer.

Week One: Jan 28-Feb 1

Day1:  Introduce group. Take reading interest inventory.

Day 2: Ms. Dextre assigns groups, based on reading interest. Group members meet and discuss their similar interests. Preview the book.
In your journal, answer the following questions:

What genre is it?
What are some characteristics of that genre?
Have you heard of the author?
Have you read another book by the author?
Did you like it?
Do you think this looks interesting to you?

Day 3: SSR time. Read for 15 minutes. You may not talk with each other during SSR time. Use your sticky notes to make notes about anything you find interesting. Think about what you’d like to discuss later with your group.   At 8:50, pull out your journals. Use your sticky notes to answer:
What is interesting about this story? Do I find the most interest in setting? Character? Plot? Main theme? After your group makes their journal entry, discuss what you each found interesting about the story.

Day 4:  Read for 15 minutes. You may not talk with each other during SSR time. Use your sticky notes to make notes about anything you find interesting. Think about what you’d like to discuss later with your group.   At 8:50, pull out your journals. Use your sticky notes to answer:
What conflict does the main character face? Who is your favorite character? Why do you identify with him/her? After all have written their entries, share with your group.

Day 5 :  Read for 15 minutes. You may not talk with each other during SSR time. Use your sticky notes to make notes about anything you find interesting.
At 8:50,  draw a mind map of characters, settings and connections in your journal. Put your name, book title and author and “week one” on your papers. Turn in to Ms. Dextre.

Week Two: February 4 - 8
Divide and Conquer!

Some group members didn't turn in last week's assignment, so we'll do some restructuring this week. Those who completed work will be in the Printz Group, the others will work in the Newbery Group for today.

Day One: Ms. Dextre  divides the class into separate groups.

Printz Group: 8:40-8:50 is your SSR time. Use your sticky notes to collect ideas, new words and discussion topics. At 8:51, students meet in small groups (common books are considered a group). Share your reading experiences so far. Everyone may be in a different place, and that's OK. Don't give spoilers! Your journal entry today will be about your group discussion. Did someone interpret something differently? Did they have a different experience or perspective? Do they identify with a different character than you do?

Newbery Group: Students will have an opportunity to turn in last week's assignment. Those with completed assignments will be moved over to the Printz Group to continue work. The remaining members will write a summary of why they did not turn in their assignments last week. These are the scripts I will use to call parents.

     Day Two:
Printz Group: Today you will be able to journal by drawing or writing - your choice.

8:40-8:50 SSR time. At 8:51, you can use your journal to summarize what you read today in ONE of the following ways:

A:  Write a few sentences about your thoughts. For instance, predict what you think will happen next. You might describe the setting with specific details. You could connect your life to a character's  experiences in the story.

B: Draw a 3-block comic strip about the section you read today. Make sure you use words to caption the images and identify the characters.

C: Make a relationship web of characters from the book.  (see sample on the board)

Newbery Group: Find an article in the Scholastic magazine. Read with your sticky notes to write:

     a. find three vocabulary terms that are specific to the theme. In your journal for today,  define the words from context clues.

     b. Use a dictionary to check your answer. List the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) with the word.

     Day Three:

Printz Group: Reading discussions

8:35-8:50 SSR time. At 8:51, your group will use the large chart paper to make a diagram. Each member takes a different-color marker to show the differences and similarities between books or characters.

If you all read the same book, diagram characters.

If you read different books, diagram the elements from your book. (plot, setting, conflict) and meet in small groups (4 or less).

Newbery Group: Scholastic articles

8:35-8:50 : Choose a new article today. Challenge yourself to read something you normally wouldn't choose to read.

8:51: Your journal entry will be similar to yesterday's:

     a. find three vocabulary terms that are specific to the theme. In your journal for today,  define the words from context clues.

     b. Use a dictionary to check your answer. List the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) with the word.

    c. (This is different from yesterday) Summarize the article in a few sentences. How would you describe the information presented to someone during a conversation?

This is a sample journal entry for today:

Battle WIthout a Victor by Robert M. Citino

1. strategist - someone who figures out where the troops go.

(actual) n. one skilled in strategy

 2. defection -  giving up?
