CIA 1: Learning About Me

Page history last edited by Linda Dextre 9 years, 7 months ago

We're getting to know ourselves and our peers.

What elements make my whole self? How does this relate to my peers?

Student Objective: You will self-reflect to write out the building blocks of your personal history. You'll examine your thoughts about reading,

your likes and dislikes, and your dreams. Using this information, you'll write a narrative about yourselves from two perspectives.

Objective:

RI6.6 Author’s point of view and purpose

W6.3 Write narratives

What Essential Questions will be considered?

How could I create a narrative using elements of my own life? How could I create different points of view in my writing?

What key knowledge and skills will students acquire as a result of this unit?

Organize, establish a point of view, and use techniques to write a narrative.

Week One
Day One: complete reader's survey

Day Two: Begin ABCs of Me graphic organizer. Fill in information relating to elements of your life. Sample is provided in the CIA notebook.

Week Two

Day One: Students finish their organizers today. If they have completed to the teacher's satisfaction, they will move to a separate location.

Using note paper (blank paper is fine), use one or more elements from your ABC Brainstorm sheet to tell a story from YOUR point of view.

First person pronouns you might use include: I, we, our, mine,  or us.

Although I would like complete sentences and punctuation, this is just the first draft to get ideas on paper. Don't stress!

Directions for writing narratives in first and third person.

Day Two: Finish your story drafts today. If time allows, revise. Does your story have:

  • characters (at least one - you!)
  • setting
  • conflict/rising action
  • resolution/falling action
  • conclusion

Day Three: Shift your perspective! Rewrite your story in third person. Use more elements from your ABC Brainstorm list to shift the story a little.

Some third-person pronouns you might use include: he, she, they, them, theirs

Their, there and they're.... how are they different? What is the correct usage?

Day Four: Finish your stories. Revise to be sure they have all the story elements listed above.

Day Five: Volunteer to read your story. No volunteers? Ms. Dextre' will randomly select. Be prepared to share!
